Oh how I LOVE sea glass. If you are unfamiliar with sea glass, it is glass that had been tumbled and smoothed to imperfect perfection by the sea and the sand. Utterly smooth and beautiful. It is also called mermaid tears or lucky tears.....mermaid tears, I LOVE that name!
There is a myth that says Neptune would be angry the beautiful mermaids that would not return his affection. In his jealous rage, he would banish the mermaids to eternally exist at the bottom of the sea. Mythology also told tales of mermaids swimming along ships to guide them and fall in love with a sailor, but since they were forced to exist at the bottom of the sea, they could never swim up to see their beloved again...hence the tears.
I know it is fiction, but love imagining that the glass is actual mermaid tears.
I have a very talented and creative friend, Jenn, who creates jewelry (click on link to see her work) from mermaid's tears she finds in the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. I miss the ocean and the bay so much I could cry actual tears...so I ordered a few of her beautiful pieces. To have them and wear them around my neck is like having a piece of home with my.
I often put them on silver chain, leather cord, or ribbon and wear them around my neck or wrist.
These pieces make fantastic gifts (Christmas, Birthday, Teacher, Mom, Sister, Friend)...you can even attach the Mermaid Tears myth to it to make it extra special. Her prices are SUPER reasonable ($10 - $30)...check her out!
