This morning, I had a photo shoot in a historic home in downtown San Antonio where my client (I have been photographing his gorgeous family for few years now) works. I had never been to this house before, so he showed me around. I was in awe from the very beginning...the wrap around porch, the original woodwork throughout the house...every step around every corner took my breath away. Every room, closet, dumbwaiter, original fixture he showed me made me giddy.
Finally, we made it to the top level...one large room,all wood, huge windows, perfect light, a veranda..I was smitten! He opened the closet to reveal the remnants of the original flowered wall paper..obviously the room of a young woman. He said "Stephanie, I saved the best for last. I knew you would love this...." and he directed me to look at the closet door
At first they seemed like generic tally marks. I thought I might see "days to graduation" or some cute teenage countdown, which would have been great..but instead I saw something that caused tears to burn in my eyes (the markings are a bit hard to read):
"Letters Written To Him"
"Days He has been Gone"
"Talked Long Distance to Him" notice the year...
Who was she? Who was "him"? Where was he??? College??? Basic Training??? Training to leave for the war??? I do not know what I loved more, these treasured tally marks of a young girl in love in 1944 or the fact that my sweet client knew me so well that he knew that I would love this and was not a bit surprised that I was so touched I cried and did not even have to ask why it made me cry.
THIS is why I love my job. My clients become these fantastic friends who touch my heart in so many ways AND I often get to see hidden treasures I may have never noticed.
